The Final Major Project

Planning for the Final Major project began In late January 2019, the first idea was a complex tale of a young man who is sexually assaulted in a night club and is forced into ridicule as he's a man and people either don't believe him or simply think he is lying for attention. This was eventually scrapped due to its heavy weight and the fact it would be almost impossible to create within the time frame and budget available.

Next the idea was revamped in late August, again focusing on an issue that isolates young men, depression. The story focused on a young man alone in his accommodation and struggling to find the energy to deal with the deal, eventually ending with him choosing to either end his own life or carry on, again this idea carried alot of emotional weight and in Early September a new Idea was born...

Æðelboren©

Æðelboren was born as an idea to fit into the Excalibur Expanded Universe©. The idea took route with a loose basis on Bushwick a film in which a young woman and an Older Veteran travel through the New York district of Bushwick, attempting to survive the beginning of the Second American Civil War.

From here it was simple to take already defined lore from a Nine-Thousand word document detailing all that has happened within the shared universe and place the concept within it.

The stage was set for the beginning of the 20 years war, a conflict set within the earths future, based along political divisions as well as dwindling resources. Although its timeline has changed drastically with the advent of Æðelboren©.

Originally a film called Detroit 2025© would be the recorded moment the 20 years war begins, however, Æðelboren shifts the war drastically earlier, with the troubles from the film Detroit 2025© actually taking place a few years after the war begins.

Like Detroit 2025©, Æðelboren© was originally designed to be a stand alone film, with the FMP acting as an advert for funding to be acquired to make the full feature, with Detroit 2025© coming later, however, as time progressed and Bushwick already filling the film slot, the decision was made for Æðelboren© to be a pilot episode for a lower budget TV show.

The Other Ideas

As with all projects, as well as the main ideas that evolve like those stated above, other ideas can be thrown into the fray and The Final Major Project was no different, some of these ideas where for higher budget films that where feature length, or simply passed over as not being the type of project that Tin Can Productions wished too work on.

These ideas as well as an early in depth look at Æðelboren©, click on the link below to view a Power Point, submitted at the start of the University Year.

Further Research

5th Wave

Rambo - First Blood

This segment will take a look at further research undertaken AFTER the previous submission, focusing on the Rambo - First Blood and others like it, how they where received by audiences and their similarities to the project. A breif analysis of Guerilla forces in history will be looked at to underastand how a Guerialla force would work in Æðelboren©

Directed by J Blakeson, 5th Wave follows the story of a young girl called Cassie desperately traveling across a Post Alien Invasion America to save her Brother, who has been kidnapped during the Fifth Wave of the invasion.

The 5th Wave was almost universally panned, receiving only a 15% Critic Score and 38% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, with most reviews on the site getting no higher than two and a half stars.

An article from the Guardian in 2016 looks into the political narratives of the film, in this case an apology for the colonial period much like the famous H.G Wells Novel The War of the Worlds is an almost direct comparison of the British Invasion of the Island of Tasmania.

The actual fact the extermination of mankind is done in waves mirrors the colonial period in which many native people where displaced or destroyed completely over time, making for an interesting side narrative which links into Æðelboren's© own underlying narrative of breaking free from the European Union and being born free to live as you please, Æðelboren© itself means born-free. The writer of the article however argues that in the 5th Wave this does not work as its too connected to Suburban-American life that the message falls flat, although this narrative would actually be an easy to show and highlight the problem to people who live in these environments.

Rambo - First Blood is an interesting adaption based on the novel, First Blood, with the films original title also being, First Blood.

Rambo - First Blood follows the story of Vietnam Veteran Rambo as he travels back to America visit an old friend from the war, only to find he is dead, following this he is arrested by local law enforcement for drifting and whilst in the jail house is subjected to incredibly harsh treatment, triggering flashbacks to the war and allowing his PTSD to take hold, when he finally snaps and escapes.

The eventual chase leads to the death of one officer and whilst protesting his innocence Rambo is shot at repeatedly, leading him to partake in a series of Guerrilla tactics to attack from the shadows, injuring many of the Law enforcement officials.

The film diverges greatly from the book, in which Rambo actually kills multiple Law Enforcement officials and kills himself along with the local Sheriff who arrested him, however the film offers a happier ending which allowed for Rambo to become a franchise as well as testing better with audiences, rather than the original ending.

Rambo also scores incredibly well with both critics and the Audience, receiving a 87% Critic Score and a 85% Audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

A 2018 article from Digital Spy explains the important message within Rambo - First Blood, PTSD.

While not entirely understood at the time the film attempts to tackle the issue faced by many returning home from fighting a horrific war only to be met with judgement and ridicule, PTSD is the main topic of the film and is shown in various way, through Rambo's relapse to battlefield tactics, to flashbacks showing the torture Rambo faced. The Film also shows how everyone but a select few treat Rambo harshly and see him as a menace more than a war hero, while also expressing that even Rambo is unhappy with some of the things he did in the war.

Guerrilla Warfare

Gate Pā

The battle of Gate Pā was part of a large scale Maori rebellion against British rule in New Zealand, much like when British forces matched up against the Zulu warriors, they believed themselves to be the superior force and so the army sent to deal with this rebellion was small, only around 1700 and contained only a few cannons.

This army was lead by General Cameron, who arriving on the 21st of April 1864, confident he prepared his lines and readied for an assault on what looked like a weak fortress.

However, unbeknownst to Cameron, the Maori had been hard at work preparing a grand deception.

Firstly, they had prepared a multitude of anti-artillery bunkers, building several smaller ones rather than a large one, with much of the fortress hiding deep tunnels for the Maori to hide until the time was right.

Secondly, Cameron's overconfidence led to a poorly formed army that simply bombarded the Maori for eight long hours, yet, eye witness accounts state much of this fire was ineffective or missed the target altogether. No more than 15 Maori where actually killed by shellfire throughout the battle.

Thirdly the Maori forces only had a garrison of around 250, of which 200 garrisoned the main defense, the triple line trenches where timbered and then covered with earth to hide and protect them, a small ditch and a bank would lead to the double line trenches which where protected by a light palisade.

And finally as the attack commenced the assault Party moved forwards, four abreast in what would come to be described as a clumsy formation by Chris Pugsley, a Military Historian.

Forced into a narrow entrance and under fire from the Maori garrison the assault party, they began to fall rapidly, but as they began to breakthrough into the compound, the British forces faced a final, crippling blow, gunfire began to ring out from below, many soldiers where downed as they where shot via trenches and tunnels and had little to no time to react to this onslaught.

Finally the close quarters fighting ensued, the Maori armed only with the nearest weapons to hand and a few rifles, they managed to remove the British leadership and left most of the British forces disorientated, fighting in confined spaces in unfamiliar terrain.

Those who could fled, but most of the army lay wounded, dying or dead, it was a complete military disaster, although the Maori would later be defeated, this shows as an example of a small guerrilla force standing its ground against a much more powerful advisory.

The Battle of Covadonga

The Kingdom of Asturias was formed through a small rebellion against the Islamic rule of the Umayyadd Caliphate, lead by its elected king, Pelagius or Don Pelayo.

During the build up to the battle (which started almost immediately after the kingdoms founding in 718) Pelagius had managed to repulse multiple attempts by the Umayyadd forces to retake the region.

Finally in 720 the Umayyadds had had enough, they sent a large force to challenge Pelagius after he had suffered a string of recent defeats, Pelagius had fewer than 500 men under his command.

Pelagius decided to retreat to terrain where the ground was impossible for a full frontal assault, a large gorge.

Al-Kama, the leader of the Umayyadd forces marched unwittingly forwards into the thickly vegetated terrain and by the time he had realized what was about to happen, it was already to late.

Pelagius had hidden troops in the thick flora on the sides of the gorge and when the time came he launched volleys of arrows at the invading forces, eventually launching a small assault on the disorientated enemy forces. The battle ended once a swell of villagers massed on the Umayyadd forces, crushing them and securing the independence of Asturias, the last Christian Kingdom in Iberia and the staging ground for the Reconquista.

The Fall of Edward

After receiving feedback for the presentation, a realization hit, the the plot line featuring Edward maybe too difficult to pull off with in the 6 minuet time frame of the film, so, Edward was removed from the story, with a total re-write of the script planned over the coming weeks, streamlining the story for Edward to be reintroduced at a later time once the show is hopefully commissioned.

However much of the original plot line will be kept, but now expanded to make more sense, the importance of the USB will be ramped up whilst Arthur and Naadiya's relationship can be built upon further, whilst their reasoning for being in the woods will be completely different.

Rather than moving to a rendezvous the former trio of characters now a duo will be seeking evidence of a German intervention in the civil war, this obviously escalates into the pair trying to escape the full scale invasion as in the original.
